ENEMY OF THE STATE:- By Femi Adesina

You have possibly watched the 1998 action-thriller film with the above title, starring Will Smith. It was the box office hit story about a group of people plotting to kill an American Congressman, and the tape of the plot was discovered.

Well, an Enemy of the State struck in Nigeria on Monday, but this time, it was no fiction. It was real life act of sabotage from somebody who does not wish his own country well at all, and who derived a sinister kind of pleasure from undermining the system.

President Muhammadu Buhari was to broadcast to the country by 8 p.m, to give an update on the battle against COVID-19, and what becomes of the lockdown that had lasted four weeks, particularly in the Federal Capital Territory, Lagos and Ogun States. Kano was also a point of heavy interest, with the strange deaths ravaging the state. Was it COVID-19 or not?

As the country waited for the President with great expectations, a purported copy of the broadcast began to circulate on social media from about 4 p.m. Whodunnit?

I took a look at the circulating document, and within one minute, I knew that it was a rogue copy. What immediately gave it away was the paragraphing. It was completely different from the one I had been part of producing, and which had been recorded for broadcast by the President.

Another tell-tale to the dubiousness of the document was the date it gave. It said the lockdown in the affected states and the FCT would be eased from May 2, while the authentic copy bore May 4. There were some other discrepancies. Paragraphs that had been excised from the final copy were still intact, and the document was riddled with spelling and grammatical errors, which you would rarely find in a presidential broadcast, which would have passed through a number of select and trusted hands.

I made a few phone calls to those of us involved with the script, right from origination, which was from outside the Presidency, to final editing, which I did, and the conclusion was easy to reach. Somebody had spirited out the original draft, which had gone through many stages of fine-tuning in terms of content and language, and thinking that it was a world exclusive in terms of artifice and underhand action, he fed it into the social media.
Who would do such a thing, except an Enemy of the State, someone who wants to ridicule the government, cause utmost confusion in the polity, and smirk his lips in malevolent pleasure, as the government, and possibly the media handlers of the President were flagellated, and taken to the cleaners.

Yoruba people talk of ‘ba ase je.’ Somebody who spoils the feast. Everybody is rejoicing and making merry, and he comes to pollute their joy. He could bring extremely bad news that sends everyone scurrying home, or looking for cover. He could even urinate in the big pot of soup in the full glare of the merrymakers. Or he could pour sand in the big pot of rice on the fire. Ba ase je (spoiler of the feast) can strike in many ways. That was the same thing the Enemy of the State did.

Igbo people speak of the proverbial lizard that ruined his own mother’s funeral. That was what the hidden hostile hand did. But he forgot that in these days of technology, almost everything leaves a trail. Before the end of that evening, computer evidences had narrowed down the suspect, and he was already answering for his evil action.

There is the house mouse called ‘oofon ‘ in Yoruba. And there is a delicious soup made from beans called ‘gbegiri.’ Yes, do you remember the popular amala and gbegiri politics as championed by Lamidi Adedibu in Oyo State in those days? That’s the soup I’m talking about. What happens when the house mouse urinates inside the bowl of gbegiri soup? Lassa fever! That’s why we have the Yoruba saying; oofon to si gbegiri, ki eleko ko eko e dani. Translating this into English makes it lose some originality, but let me try. The house mouse has urinated in the pot of gbegiri soup, let all merrymakers find their ways home. That was what the evil mind attempted to do by leaking the presidential broadcast hours before it came. But he fired blank, having laid hands on a wrong copy.

However, if that person had got the final, authentic copy, that is the same way he would have leaked it. To what end, to what purpose? Sinister. Sneaky. Hateful.

Some people hate their own country, and ironically would be the first to complain that things were not going well. Every act of the government (any government) they would undermine. If they can stick a knife into the soft underbelly of government in any way, they do it with relish, and would be the first to grumble that things were not going right. Enemies of the State.

If the person that leaked the unedited draft of the broadcast had access to more sensitive national documents, he would do the same thing. If he cottons on information that could sell Nigeria to the enemy, ho would gladly do it. Thou art in the midst of foes, watch and pray.

I am surprised that a large number of people, including newspaper houses, fell for the gambit. They took their information from the wrong source, and ended up publishing falsehood. That was what the Enemy of the State wanted. Cause maximum confusion. And he succeeded to some extent.
There is a way we release information from the media office of the President. And the media knows it. If a presidential speech was to be given ahead, there would be an embargo on it for a particular time. The circulating copy bore no embargo, yet they fell for it. And got embarrassed by publishing inaccurate information. Serves them right, do you say? The final copy was released by 8.06 p.m, good enough time for a newspaper to still produce and get early to market for the next day.

The social media is being used for every purpose: good and bad. It is the bastion of fake news, hate news, concoctions and all sorts of conjurations. Will the users and consumers be more discerning? It is said that the person that stole a keg of palm oil from the rafter is not the only thief. The person that collected the keg from him is also a rogue. Those who began to share an obvious leak, rebroadcasting it, are also not guiltless. Be quick to hear, and slow to speak.

It was amusing to me to hear armchair critics blaming the media office of the President for the leakage. Ignorance. Why pontificate about what you don’t know? They were on radio and television stations the next morning, magisterially shooting breeze. It was Dr Reuben Abati, immediate past media adviser to a President who gave some proper perspectives on how a presidential broadcast is originated and produced, and how it was improbable that the leakage came from the Presidency. The lesson? Seek information, get your facts right, before arriving at a conclusion, lest you look foolish and uninformed.

Some people are not interested in the well being of their own country. Sad, very sad. Such would sell their mothers, and their country for thirty pieces of silver. Thou art in the midst of foes, watch and pray.

PUTTING THE RECORDS STRAIGHTIN RE – NIGERIAN BAR ASSOCIATION (NBA) PRESS STATEMENT ON ONE EMPEROR OGBONNA

My attention has been drawn to a press statement issued by Kunle Edun, the National Publicity Secretary of Nigerian Bar Association on behalf of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) with regard to one Barrister Emperor Ogbonna which has also been published on the front page and page 16 of The Punch Newspaper of today Thursday April 30, 2020. As Chief of Staff to the Governor who was also mentioned in the press statement, I am compelled to put the records straight to wit:

The facts put forward by NBA Aba branch which NBA National relied on are copiously false, erroneous and misleading.

Paragraphs 1,2 and 3 of the NBA press statement clearly confirm that at least Mr. Ogbonna has accepted that he re-shared a post in his Facebook page that Governor Ikpeazu went to India and took an oath before a Hindu god to mortgage Abia State. He also made other posts on this. Governor Ikpeazu has never visited India all his life and as a law-abiding citizen, he took recourse to the law instead of self-help.

The Governor reported this case of cybercrime to the Police and the Police arrested Mr. Ogbonna and charged him before the Federal High Court in Umuahia for cybercrime and not terrorism as the misinformation from NBA Aba opines.

On 28th April, 2020, the Federal High Court in Umuahia granted Mr. Ogbonna bail and adjourned the matter to 25th May, 2020 for hearing. This is the much involving the Governor and we are ready to prosecute the case. No government official even attended Court on the said 28th April, 2020, what more entering the Court premises for any arrest.

I have asked questions and I understand that the said Emperor Ogbonna was now arrested because he had made other divisive and subversive comments on his Facebook page against President Buhari and the Federal Republic of Nigeria referring to Nigeria as an Islamic Republic, calling for the impeachment of President Muhammadu Buhari, calling for the removal of Northern Nigeria from Nigeria, describing Northern Nigeria as an illiterate population and the biggest problem of Nigeria and inciting comments that Buhari hates the Igbos. How does this concern Governor Ikpeazu or Abia State government officials?

The NBA headquarters and the public can now see that NBA Aba carried their emotions too far and thus misinformed NBA headquarters, hence the unwarranted and manifestly embarrassing press statement. I know that the Nigerian Bar Association leadership will never support crime but I am nonetheless appalled that my NBA could hurriedly issue a press statement on an issue without hearing from the other side, not even a phone call to any official of the Abia State government. This is bad.

We cannot, however, be blackmailed into abandoning the course of justice.

No one is above the law and Mr. Ogbonna as a lawyer should have known the consequences of his actions and that Nigeria has a Cyber Crime Act.

Chief of Staff to Abia State Governor.

NBA Demands for His Release of Emperor Ogbonna by DSS and Abia State

Mr. Emperor Ogbona is a lawyer practising in the commercial city of Aba in Abia State. Information provided by the Executives of the branch Interim Committee confirm the following:

That Emperor Ogbonna Esq. was alleged to have made an online publication stating that the Governor of Abia State, Okezie Ikpeazu allegedly visited a shrine outside the country where he was said to have sworn to an oath of allegiance abd secrecy to the former Governor of the State.

That the online publication was alleged to have been made on the Facebook page of Emperor Ogbonna. Mr. Ogbonna denied being the originator of the post but that he only re-shared it.

Further information revealed that the State Governor was alleged to have made a personal statement to the Police on the matter and therefore, he is a Prosecution Witness. Mr. Ogbonna was subsequently arrested by the officers of the Nigerian Police Force and charged before the Federal High Court, Umuahia with the offence of terrorism.

Inspite of all the deliberate obstacles put the way by the State government and the Prosecution to prevent the hearing and grant of the bail application, the Federal High Court eventually granted bail to Emperor Ogbonna Esq only on the condition that he be released to a lawyer of not less than 20 years at the bar.

This, according to information, infuriated officials of the Abia State government who crowded the court premises, and said to have been led by the Chief of Staff to the Governor, one Dr. A.C.B. Agbazuere, who incidentally is also a lawyer.

The Abia State government officials accompanied with officials of the State Security Service (DSS) made forceful attempt to re-arrest Emperor Ogbonna within the premises of the Federal High Court but this was resisted by the prison officials and lawyers present because the bail term was yet to be perfected.

We were informed that the premises of the Federal High Court was made almost riotous by the insistence of the Abia State government officials and the DSS (apparently acting in concert) to forcefully take Emperor Ogbonna from the custody of the prison officials; the bar leaders present had to advise the prison officials to take Emperor Ogbonna back to the prison and to remain there until they perfect the bail term. Still yet, the Abia State government officials and the DSS personnel followed the prison officials to the Federal Prison, Umuahia. The leaders of Aba branch ensured that Emperor Ogbonna was safely in the prison before they all left.

The NBA was further informed by the Interim Executives of Aba branch that, it therefore, came to them as a rude shock, when they got information that the Prison authorities released Emperor Ogbonna Esq. to the DSS officials and officials of Abia State government allegedly on ‘order from above’.

The circumstances surrounding the arrest and re-arrest of Emperor Ogbonna by the DSS at the instance of the Abia State government are very disturbing. Without commenting on the merit of the charge, being subjudice, it is a fact that the matter has already been submitted to the jurisdiction of the Federal High Court, and the Court graciously granted Emperor Ogbonna bail. There was therefore no basis for the further involvement of the DSS apparently at the instigation by the officials of the Abia State government to continue denying Emperor Ogbonna his constitutional right to personal liberty. The forceful arrest and continued detention of Emperor Ogbonna has made it impossible for him to perfect his bail term, and therefore, the actions of the Abia State government and the DSS amount to flagrant disobedience to a valid order of a Federal High Court and violation of the constitutional rights of Emperor Ogbonna Esq.

The Nigerian Bar Association, therefore, demands that the State Security Service (DSS) and the Abia State Government immediately release Emperor Ogbonna Esq. to face his charge before the Federal High Court, for which plea has already been taken and the matter adjourned for hearing.

The NBA trusts that the Abia State Government and DSS would not give the impression that they are above the law of the land and do not have confidence in the credibility of their complaint before the Federal High Court. The NBA refuses to accept popular opinion that the harrassment of Emperor Ogbonna Esq could be a subtle attempt to intimidate him to kowtow to any untoward compromise; if it is true, then it amounts to interference with the judicial processes by State officials who should know better, and this would be highly frowned at.

While the Nigerian Bar Association commends the leadership and members of Aba branch of the NBA for ensuring that Emperor Ogbonna Esq is allowed the privileges and facilities provided by the Consititution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, the NBA shall continue working with the relevant authorities to ensure the early release of Emperor Ogbonna Esq and encourage actions towards seeking redress for the violation of his constitutional rights.

APPRECIATING MAZI NNAMDI KANU – THE INDOMITABLE BLACK-AFRICAN FREEDOM FIGHTER AFTER MARTIN LUTHER KING JR AND NELSON MANDELA

(By Nathaniel I. Ndiokwere)

PREAMBLE: WHO IS THE RIGHTEOUS ONE?

Who is a saint? Who is without sin; let him throw the first stone! Most Religious people, including the Popes and canonized saints, great Educationists, Professors, great Inventors, Politicians and World leaders – living or alive – have never been known to be free of sin. Some are even known to have served prison sentences for various ‘crimes’ before they became world figures! Few Nigerian political and religious leaders, past and present, are known to be ‘saints’.

Just a few, if any at all, who must have made notable contributions towards the welfare of their people still enjoy a comfortable place in history books! Can we award marks on ‘merit’ to the prominent few we still remember their names in the field of politics in Nigeria? Nnamdi Azikiwe – Zik of Africa, Obafemi Awolowo, Ahmadu Bello, Saduana of Sokoto, Tafawa Balewa, Shehu Shagari, Goodluck Jonathan, Obasanjo (civilian) and Muhammadu Buhari (civilian)? Surely ALL OF THEM have/had big DENTS on their character, and surely just few Nigerians speak well of them. They have all big dents! I am sure if human beings can shun prejudices, and speak the truth, not one of the former and present Nigerian leaders may score up to 20% mark.

On the State level – Eastern states, as an example: Michael Okpara, Akanu Ibiam, Ukpabi Asika? Jim Nwobodo, Orjiuzor Kalu, Theodore Orji, Samuel Onunaka Mbakwe? Ikedi Ohakim, Rochas Anayo Okorocha, Emeka Ihedioha, Hope Uzodimma – All have big terrible Dents. Perhaps only SAMUEL MBAKWE may score above 40%! History supplies verifiable facts and figures.

MAZI NNAMDI KANU – THE FORMER ALLEGED ‘CROOK’

You may like MNK, hate him, agree with him, disagree; it is becoming clearer that History may at last identify the guy as an indomitable Black-African patriot and freedom fighter after Martin Luther King Jr and Nelson Mandela, among former ‘rebels’ who played a great role in the struggle for the liberation of their people from slavery and bondage.

Those who hate Kanu, including his fellow Igbos, write all sorts of trash to discredit IPOB movement and their leader. Look at the type of stuff they write and circulate: “Nnamdi Kanu was once a scammer, 419-er, a fake”….! No problem. The big question: “What do these enemies of progress hope to achieve by this campaign of calumny? ‘Allegations’, True or False; that WAS in the past; ‘HE WAS…’, ‘MNK used to be….’ But today he is “Born-Again”, intelligent, sensible, and full of wisdom, and speaks the truth. He is alive today working for the freedom of his people. Why join your enemies to block your freedom and that of generations to come?

GOOD LEADERS MAKE SACRIFICES

Surely MNK has the largest followers among all Igbo leaders today, and these are not ‘idle useless mob’. However MNK may not be ‘Superhuman’ and without dent; but his case is surely that of a lone voice in the wilderness! What do you expect from his people! The Bible confirms that a prophet is not acknowledged in his own village, among his own people. What will MNK lose more in Nigeria, when the Cabal, aided by Igbo traitors tried to get rid of the young man in a Historical “Python Dance?” They massacred so many youths and as well brought about the untimely death of his parents. He escaped death because of the presence of some Biafran soldiers in Nigerian military. If I were MNK I will not give up this struggle, come what may. I will face death and join my dead parents where they are! But let posterity take records.

MNK AND THE ZOO REPUBLIC

Many ‘educated’ Nigerians do not like MNK primarily because of his ‘language’. But how can you blame the young man, when in a “Democratic country”:
(1) The IDENTITY of the President has been under contention for over 3 years now? But I do not admire how the ‘investigation’ of this ‘mystery’, ‘allegation’ is going on! It should NOT be Nnamdi Kanu or any private journalist, foreign or local, who should tell the world the ‘Truth’ of the Matter. It is part of Nigerian History today that ABBA KYARI is dead and buried. Period! Documented, publicly and officially confirmed by “competent” government authorities. The historical records are in the archives.
(2) The ‘allegation’ that Buhari is dead and buried in Saudi Arabia since 2017 sounds FUNNY! What should be the “very important reason/s” for Buhari family to hide the death of their father? In a matter of life and death event, is it a Political Party or Government in power that makes public the death of a family member? Is the reason for the Cabal to remain in power till the end of the world enough to frame a ‘conspiracy theory’ surrounding the identity of a Head of State, and to choose or CLONE a non- Nigerian from Sudan, and name him (Dead) Buhari? Does the Cabal need such irresponsible, stupid, ‘rigorous procedure or tactics’ to retain power? With whom, which Political Party in Nigeria are the Conquering Fulanis competing for political supremacy! Igbos, Yorubas, Ibibios, Itskekiris, Tivi, or the Ikwere Political Parties? Is APC or PDP not the same Northern Nigerian Political Party? Ridiculous! The Fulani Cabal and World Fulani Congress, together with the British own and control Nigeria, right from the Amalgamation. Who else, what power outside the North can wrestle political power from them? Can’t they retain power as long as they wish?
(3) This writer will not accept the ‘FAIRY-TALE’ that the present Nigerian president is not MUHAMMADU BUHARI, the military dictator who once seized power in military coup in 1984. I will not blame any Nigerian who dismisses these Buhari/Jubril controversies as ‘TORTOISE MYTH’.
(4) WHY! It is not because what the aggrieved and disillusioned Nigerians, including MNK are saying, is completely false. No! Their stories may be correct; even 100% correct and verifiable.
(5) BUT, BEHOLD! STOP A MINUTE! Nigerians and the world at large will only like to hear from the HORSE’S MOUTH! No speculations! No guesswork! As it stands today, the only person who can settle the Buhari/Jubril Saga is the PMB family. The one single voice is that of his wife AISHER BUHAR! No need to hear from Femi Adesina, Adamu Adamu, El Rufai, Tinibu, Obsanjo, Queen of England, Ohaneze Ndigbo or Emir of Sokoto. That is uncalled for.
(6) “PAPER EVIDENCES” AND “PROOFS”: Nigerians don’t need evidence of ‘Death Certificate’ or similar ridiculous propositions. The president, if dead, should be given a befitting burial! Another Cabal, takes his place! No contest! If at last the story becomes “UNFOUNDED”, then all rumor mongers must be tried and prosecuted!
(7) If Buhari is dead a long time ago; how long will the Cabal keep it ‘secret’ and why? What will they gain by playing the game of hide and seek? How long will the ‘Cover Up’ last? Are the organizers of this “Fraud” BRAINLESS? Like ‘Coronavirus Pandemic’, no one can predict the end of the ‘game’ any more. The word is ‘Indefinite!’ Does it worth all the pains?

MNK AND THE RESTORATION OF BIAFRA

As for the political future of the contraption called Nigeria, MNK is the only one talking sense. How can two separate systems of government – SHARIA and DEMOCRACY co-exist and function at the same time in “ONE NIGERIA?” RIDICULOUS, A MOCK, AN OBJECT OF PERPETUAL DERISION! There are no more options for ‘settlement!’ No force can stop the end of unworkable experiment and an illusion. The future generation of young Nigerians will hold the present elders responsible for the calamity befalling Nigeria. The Old pre-war regional setups should go separate ways and in an atmosphere devoid of rancor and hate, the emerging leaders should get together and discuss their ‘native problems’ (if any), in REGIONAL CONSTITUTIONAL CONFERENCES. Thinking about war and use of force in order to achieve peace, progress and stability is not only unnecessary; it is equally foolish, an unmitigated disaster!

CONCLUSION

Nnamdi Kanu remains the only credible leader, freedom fighter in Biafraland. His name is already in history books. Therefore trying to destroy him or his movement for the liberation of the oppressed people will not achieve anything; rather it will hasten the process for the emancipation of the “Primitive Tribes of the Lower Niger” (Achebe).

(Sorry for taking much of your time. Say your mind and as well share if it makes sense to you)

Alex Otti might well be the most odious liar known to humanity:- JOK

My attention has been drawn to a statement credited to one Mr Alex Otti who claims to be “a citizen of Abia State” wherein he stated, among other things that, “This letter was masterminded by three people, the former CPEneh Okon, the Chief of Staff to the Governor, Anthony Agbazuere and the Commissioner for Information, John Okiyi Kalu. They subsequently sold the evil plot to Okezie Ikpeazu who had no problems lending his name and signature to it. I will reveal more information on this if any of them denies.”

Let me state without equivocation that Mr Otti lied against my person and possibly lied with other statements made in that publication titled “RE: PROTEST AGAINST THE TRANSFER OF THE ABIA STATE COMMISSIONER OF POLICE, CP ENEH OKON”. The same way he lied about his local government of origin in 2015 and also lied to the people of Aba same year that he (as a private citizen) obtained International Finance Corporation (IFC) facility of USD 100bn (or USD 100m) to develop the city even when he knew that to be false and, of course, investigations at IFC proved him to be an audacious liar.

While I am well aware of the options available to me to seek legal redress for the above defamation from Mr Alex Otti, I am also aware of the judgement of Almighty God and, hence, will plead my case before Him in the public.

If what Mr Otti stated, concerning my “masterminding” or writing any fake or real letter, as cited by him, is true, may the Almighty God unleash very harsh judgement on me and my generations but bless him. But if Mr Otti lied against me, as he is used to regularly lie about matters concerning Abia, may God judge him harshly along with his generations and bless me.

His only saving grace will be a public apology to me within 24 hours of this publication as after that I will leave everything to God the Just Judge.

For the benefit of those who may wish to know what I know or do not know about the said letter referred to by Otti, let me state that I only saw the online copy forwarded to me by a concerned citizen of Abia State, after the document was published by Otti’s media aide. The person who forwarded it to me wanted to know if it was real or fake. I responded to the fellow that my focus was on carrying out the assignment given to me as a member of the state inter-ministerial committee on COVID-19 which entails, most importantly, saving our people from the rampaging coronavirus, and that I did not have time for political distractions in these trying times.

For the avoidance of doubt, I never discussed the writing of any letter, fake or real, as published by Otti, with Dr ACB Agbazuere or the former CP Ene Okon, at any time in my life and only saw the material document as posted by one of Otti’s minions. Mr Otti is free to publish any evidence linking me with the writing of the said letter, real or fake, or face God’s judgement as I have no time for litigations or “he said, she said” back and forth.

To those who do not know Mr Otti and his negative political interventions in Abia State, I urge you to always scrutinize every comment or statement from him including his greetings. If the man can confidently lie against me on a matter I knew nothing about you can imagine how many lies he must have fabricated against Governor Okezie Ikpeazu whom he sees as the reason for his serial failure to desperately Govern Abia State. If a man of his supposed pedigree can lie so freely and dangerously without any iota of verification, then such a person cannot be said to harbor any ambition founded on the required virtues or need to serve the people of our dear state. Otti lied against me in this matter and I am convinced he has serially and dangerously lied against Governor Ikpeazu in private and public utterances.

It is only unmitigated bitterness of the soul that will make a man who was roundly defeated for the same office in 2 polls, losing by even a wider margin in the second one, as well as at the Supreme Court, to continue to hold the public view that he won same election. Even elementary school pupils know that elections have rules and to win you must be so declared based on the rules of the game. Twice, Otti litigated his usually warped claims of victory up to the Supreme Court of Nigeria and on both occasions the court decided that he had no basis. It is both preposterous of him and contemptuous of the highest court in our land and the people of Abia State to claim he won an election after going through all the legal processes involved in validating a victory and still lost. That this false claim of non existent electoral victory is the basis for all the distractions, disruption and sabotage Mr Otti has unleashed on Abians is sad and unfortunate.

For the records, I stand by my previous statement that Barr. Emperor Gabriel works for Mr Otti as I am aware of a previous social media post made by him to the effect that he was hired by Otti to join his legal team at the tribunal. In fact, it was from his social media post that I first saw the particulars of Otti’s legal position at the tribunal. I challenge Otti and his minions to deny that Emperor made that unchallenged claim via the social media.

Regarding the ongoing legal issues of Emperor, while I understand his pain, I must once more state that I have no hand in the petition against him or his arrest and detention beyond knowing after the fact that the Governor was pained by one of his false, mischievous and malicious publications against his person to the effect that he swore an oath in India to steal the money of the people of the state. Governor Okezie Ikpeazu is a husband and father to his children. He has always been a highly responsible family man who has committed all his life to promoting Christian values both in his family and the society at large. He is regarded as a highly revered Christian in his community of worship and before reasonable persons in general. It is therefore understandable why he was clearly pained by the malicious publication which sought to malign him and destroy all that he has built as a Christian over the years. As a peaceful man who does not see himself as being above the law no matter his exalted position, his only reasonable recourse was to seek peaceful redress through legal means, and no one can or should begrudge him for that.

His position, which he informed me of later is simply to give the said Barrister Emperor and other purveyors of the falsehood the opportunity to disgrace him in court by cogently and copiously defending their publications with proofs. He has publicly stated that he has never traveled to India since he was born and details of his international travels are available with the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS). All anyone has to do to contradict his position is simply to subpoena his travel details from NIS and nail him in court. On the other hand, if Emperor and whoever sold him that fake news do not have evidence of his ever traveling to India or swearing any oath, let them simply apologize to him publicly and desist from manufacturing and sharing falsehood concerning him. That is not too much to ask by any genuinely aggrieved citizen. I know that if a public apology is issued, the Governor will most likely forgive and forget, as the good Christian that he is.

Come to think of it, is it not the same Governor Ikpeazu that provided funds for the treatment of Emperor Ogbonna when he was shot by suspected kidnappers some time ago? Can such a kind hearted man be said to be wicked and malicious? How many critics of his administration has Governor Ikpeazu arrested, caused to be beaten or threatened for criticizing his government? Yet, Abia is reputed to have the most acerbic and vitriolic purveyors of falsehood disguised as political opposition as led by Otti. Or does Mr Alex Otti not know that there is a red line between criticism and peddling of malicious falsehood? Will Alex Otti accept such lies against his person without recourse to legal redress? Was Emperor not detained by a law court following due process?

For more than four years this malicious rumor against the Governor was peddled by sundry opposition characters whose sponsors are now obviously showing up one after the other. The Governor restrained himself with patience thinking that Emperor and others involved would refrain and restrain themselves from such ignoble acts. Alas, they didn’t! They couldn’t!

Let me then ask: shouldn’t the Governor clear the records even if it’s for the sake of his grand children? Even first year law students know that when you publish or share falsehood over the internet against someone, you are risking jail term on the basis of our existing cybercrime law 2015. It beats me when those who should know allow themselves to be manipulated by desperate politicians who actually see and use them as mere pawns.

God sees the hearts of men and no amount of cosmetics can hide our thoughts from God. Let Him judge me and also judge my accuser, Alex Chioma Otti. But let me state that these 2023 election induced malice and lies are puerile and infantile as power belongs to God and God alone.

Lastly, I make bold to say that it is unconscionable to seek to distract the state with 2023 politics at a time the Government and our people are battling to save themselves from the rampaging COVID-19. And if anyone previously expected me to respond to political nonsense related to a fake or real letter when we have people battling for their lives as a result of COVID-19 infection, that person does not know me at all.

Please, let’s join hands to fight this virus in our state and nation. When it is time for politics, let those who are interested play politics, and lose or win.

(It is very important to state that this piece is strictly my personal opinion and has nothing to do with the Government of Abia State).

Thank you.

EMPEROR_OGBONNA: ABIA LAWYER “SNATCHED FROM PRISON OFFICIALS” AFTER COURT BAIL

The whereabouts of Abia lawyer Emperor Ogbonna, whom the Federal High Court, Umuahia, granted bail Tuesday afternoon, is presently unknown.

No, Ogbonna did not run away. He was taken into custody by operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) on the orders of Anthony Agbazuere, a credible source told The Realm News.

Agbazuere is chief of staff to Abia State governor Dr Okezie Ikpeazu.

Charged under a controversial cybercrime law, Barrister Ogbonna had been detained for weeks for allegedly the governor.

After the lawyer was granted bail on Tuesday, Agbazuere reportedly led DSS operatives to arrest him again within the court premises, the barrister’s counsel Ladu Martins told The Realm News. The plan did not work at first but succeed later.

“Agbazuere and the DSS blocked my car from leaving the premises,” Martins said.

“They asked if I was driving Ogbonna out of the court premises and I told them no. Still, they told me to wind down the window so they could take a look inside my vehicle.

“After they realised the Ogbonna was being ferried in the prison’s vehicle as he should, they blocked the prison’s vehicle and told the officials to hand my client over.

“But the prison officials refused because Ogbonna had not met his bail conditions and so should be returned to jail, not to Agbazuere or the DSS,” Martins said.

Another source told us that the chief of staff and the DSS backed down to save face but later arrested Ogbonna again.

“We don’t know where they have taken him. It is shocking how they were able to snatch him from the prison officials,” the source said.

RE: PROTEST AGAINST THE TRANSFER OF THE ABIA STATE COMMISSIONER OF POLICE, CP ENEH OKON

PRESS RELEASE

On Wednesday April 22, 2020, a letter with the above caption was written by the Governor of Abia State, Dr, Okezie Ikpeazu and sent to the Chairman of the Police Service Commission. This letter made many weighty allegations against me including that I am a sponsor of IPOB, that I set up the attack at Ohafia where a policeman shot a young man and the youth of the community carried out a reprisal attack on a police station and that I caused the removal of the CP again for refusing IPOB and detractors of the government to riot in Abia.

DELAY IN RESPONSE. I would have responded immediately I saw this bizarre letter but I learnt that the Governor and his team were strategizing on how to deny the letter and christen it “fake”. Somehow, they have not responded officially close to one week after. I believe they have realised that I have more information than they thought. This letter was masterminded by three people, the former CPEneh Okon, the Chief of Staff to the Governor, Anthony Agbazuere and the Commissioner for Information, John Okiyi Kalu. They subsequently sold the evil plot to Okezie Ikpeazu who had no problems lending his name and signature to it. I will reveal more information on this if any of them denies.

PROCEDURE. I was miffed at the level of mediocrity in the state where none of these people knew that this letter which shouldn’t have been written in the first place should have gone to the Inspector General of Police and not the Police Service Commission as the latter is the board that approves or declines appointments recommended by the IG amongst other functions. May be they had a problem with the office of the IG and had to go above him to his board. I am also surprised that the governor did not know that it is above his pay grade to determine who would be posted or retained in his state as CP and that his brief is to work with whoever the Police authorities send to him as CP.

THE ISSUES. The main issue here is that the Governor and his Chief Of Staff had formed the habit of intimidating and unlawfully arresting people who are opposed to them using the former Commissioner of Police and some policemen at the legal department of the State Command. Once they decide on who to incarcerate, the police would arrest the person, based on petitions raised by the private Chambers of the Chief of Staff, and bundle the person to a compromised magistrate court. The charges are normally cybercrime, threat to the life of the governor or terrorism. The Magistrate knowing fully well that he has no jurisdiction over matters like these would remand the victim to Afara Prisonin Umuahia. The family of their victim would start running around and would be advised by the same captors to go and beg the governor and write an undertaking not to criticize the governor again. Failing which, the matter would then move to the appropriate court, sometimes after one month of being held in prison where the victim would now be granted bail. The case of Emperor Ogbonna that the Governor mentioned in his letter is still live as he is still being held in Afara Prison. The governor attached Emperor’s facebook posts where he criticized the federal government and cunningly refused to attach the recent posts for which he ordered his arrest. Why did Ikpeazu not arrest him when he made the attached posts before the election of last year? Why didn’t Ikpeazu attach his current posts against himself in the petition? Why is it that it is only now that he criticized Ikpeazu that he ordered his arrest? The charge made and filed in the Magistrate court and the Information at the Federal High court made no reference to the President rather allegations of intimidation and threat to the life of Ikpeazu. A defenseless lawyer , who merely asked questions. Meanwhile this gentleman who he is still being kept in prison 6 weeks after even in this pandemic period is presumed innocent by our laws until proven guilty. To set the records straight, I do not know Emperor Ogbonna. I have never met nor spoken to him. So the allegation of him being sponsored by me is laughable. When the plight of the young man was brought to my attention and by then he had been incarcerated for about 3 weeks, I picked up my phone and called CP Okon. I started by telling him that I did not know Mr. Ogbonna but as an Abia citizen, I thought I should intervene. I reminded him that this is a democracy and warned him about being used by the Governor and his co travelers to abuse the fundamental human rights of Abians including Emperor Ogbonna.

There was a similar experience with another Abian, Mr. Don Norman Obinna, a journalist who was also picked up about a year ago under similar circumstances. The petition against him was also written by the same law office of the Chief of Staff, again to the Commissioner of Police, Abia State. When I intervened,CP Okon claimed he did not know about the plot. Investigations showed that indeed, he was at the centre of the plot. Towards the end of last year, another Abia citizen, this time one of Ikpeazu’s former aides, Dr. Chris Nwagboso was also picked up for criticizing Ikpeazu. They humiliated him and got him to write letters of apology and undertaking to the governor before he was released. There are lots of other such illegal arrests and detention under CP Okon. The truth is that as an enlightened Abia Citizen, I will not keep quiet when I see things going wrong. It doesn’t matter If I know the victim or not. Just like Frantz Fanon said, “every on looker is either a coward or a traitor” and I am neither. I believe that is the problem Ikpeazu has with me, and I am sorry to disappoint him as no amount of blackmail, intimidation, petitions or falsehood will make me change. If there’s any one that has to change, it is him.

On the other puerile allegations, I make bold to challenge Ikpeazu to come up with proofs to show that I am the sponsor of IPOB or forever hide his head in shame. I consider this as a cheap attempt to pitch me against the authorities which will fail. It was actually his incompetence in dealing with the small insurrection that ballooned into the python dance. Simply put, Ikpeazu was the one that called for the python dance. On the Ohafia incident, even his CP Okon admitted that the policeman that pulled the trigger was not only under the influence of alcohol, but was on an illegal duty. Ikpeazu sent a “high powered” delegation to the family of the deceased to commiserate with them. The revisionist Ikpeazu in his petition turns around to accuse me of setting up an ambush that led to the unrest in Ohafia. Pray, how did that happen? While it is not my concern about who is commissioner of Police in Abia, it will be nice for Ikpeazu to tell the world why he was pleading that CP Okon be left with him for another six months? Are there things that have been hatched that will need six months to mature?

CONCLUSION. It is clear that something is terribly wrong with the government in Abia state. That as the world is battling Covid 19 and just two days after the index cases in Abia, the governor found the time to write a letter laced with a lot of lies and blackmail against his citizen is to say the least very reprehensible. It is important to remind Ikpeazu that I am not a violent person. If I was, he won’t be governor today because he didn’t win any elections in Abia State. He still rules on a stolen mandate. But even at that, he will do himself a lot of good if he begins to transit from primordial interests to serving the people. Punishing them for not voting for him would not help him in any way. He also needs to realise that power is transient. He is governor today and he will be ordinary citizen tomorrow. Having said all these, it is important to make the following demands:

  1. That Ikpeazu withdraws this odious letter to the Chairman, Police Service Commission and its members (and I’m aware that all members got copies via email).
  2. That Ikpeazu sends letters of apology to the aforementioned people for misleading them.
  3. That Ikpeazu sends an unreserved apology to me for defaming my character and false accusation.
  4. That Mr. Emperor Ogbonna who is still unlawfully detained in Afara prison be set free immediately, together with all others that are incarcerated in Abia Prisons for criticizing the governor and his God fathers.
  5. That the governor ensures that people working under him stop harassing innocent Abia Citizens for airing their views about governance in Abia State.
  6. That the governor deals with the conflict of interest situation where a public servant uses his private law chambers to harass tax paying citizens of the state.

Let me reassure Ikpeazu that I have no personal grudge against him, after all, I neither knew him nor had any thing to do with him before he came to contest the governorship elections. His attempt to wage a personal war with me, is simply childish. All I’m interested in is good governance. I’m aware that he has immunity as a governor. I, however, wish to remind him that immunity and irresponsibility don’t go together. I may not be able to prosecute him because of his immunity, but it is not the same with the incompetent people mentioned above that he has chosen to surround himself with.

Let me end this release with a famous quote from General Collin Powell thus “out of all the manifestations of power, the one that appeals to me most is restraint”. My dear brother, Okezie Victor Ikpeazu, PHD, apply restraint. Power is transient. You were a pauper, just like me, yesterday. You have power today. You will become an ordinary citizen tomorrow. Think and think again.

Senate Grants Accelerated Approval To Buhari’s N850 billion Loan Request.

…management prevents journalists.

( See Exclusive Leaked Photo of President Buhari’s Letter to the senate)

Kenneth Udeh, Abuja.

The Apex legislative Chamber on Tuesday granted a speedy approval to President Muhammadu Buhari to borrow a fresh loan of N850 billion to finance the 2020 budget.

President Buhari had approached the Senate seeking approval for the loan of in line with provisions of the 1999 Constitution.

The President’s request was contained in a letter read on the floor of the Senate by the President of the Senate, Ahmad LAWAN.

According to Buhari, the fresh loan will be sourced from the Nigerian Domestic Capital Market to assist in the funding of critical capital projects.

The outbreak of Coronavirus has affectedly adversely the 2020 budget; necessitating a few adjustments to reflect current harsh global economic activities.

Buhari said in the light of the Global economy, it was crucial to seek for the new loan from the domestic market at this time; he indicated that the conditions were quite favourable.

The Senate considered Buhari’s request and unanimously granted approval.

The upper legislative chamber however mandated its relevant committees to liaize with the Minister of Finance, Zainab Ahmed on the modalities for the loan.

This was as the Senate called on the executive to quickly come forward with the revised Medium Term Expenditure Framework (MTEF), as well as the 2020 budget for approval and passage.

The upper legislative chamber however called on the executive to begin to aggressively pursue diversification and change the current structure of the Nigerian economy to cover critical areas like agriculture, health, education and infrastructure.

Meanwhile, there was drama as security agents barred duly accredited journalists from covering activities of the National Assembly.

Journalists numbering over 100, who arrived at the National Assembly entrance, were stopped. They were also not allowed to stay anywhere close to the entrance to the complex by security agents, who claimed they were under strict instructions not to allow any journalists gain access.

WHO CAST A SPELL ON US? (Part 15)-Don Norman Obinna (Agu Ibeku)

“Congratulations sir, on your new appointment.” “OVI got it right; Owee is a round peg in a round hole.” “If no be Egbe mgburu Agu na who kwanu?” “Duff the cap for the man wey sabi!” were some of the malapropos panegyrics which romanticized the appointment of Dr ACB Agbazuere as the new Chief of Staff a few months back.
However, a concatenation of blunders culminating in the arrests and criminal incarcerations of mavericks have confirmed the appointment a renascent despotism. A misbegotten letter (that brought the office of the governor to disrepute) written to the Police Service Commission (PSC) on Wednesday 22, April 2020, was the height of it all.
These synchronous cataclysms buttressed the saying that “enthusiasm is no succedaneum for professionalism.” Giving power to a tyrant is tantamount to handing a car key and a bottle of whiskey to a teenager or live ammunition to an amok in a chockablock market. The devastation is better imagined than experienced.

A glimpse into the office of the chief of staff shows that he is a principal staff officer or an aide-de-camp to highly placed individuals, such as presidents, governors or top-ranking military officers. His primary duty is to provide a buffer between his principal and his team. He works behind the scenes to solve problems, mediate disputes, and deal with issues before they get to the knowledge of the chief executive.
More often than not, chief of staff acts as a confidante and advisor to the chief executive. He is a sounding board for ideas not, a creator of problems, who incurs a widespread odium or exposes his principal/office to critical opprobrium as we ‘ve seen in the case of Agbazuere hitherto.
Except for Dr Okezie Ikpeazu’s known breviloquence, the letter to the PSC (replete with gaping syntactic anomalies and farrago of requests) would have put a question mark over the authenticity of his PhD.

More embarrassing is the fact that the letter has the governor’s John Hancock on it; thanks to the chief of staff who places a premium on the pursuant of personal agenda than his principal’s susceptibilities. But for consanguineous sentimentalism, the peccantness would have earned him the sack.
Diligent execution of dirty jobs has taken Agbazuere to a position he never envisaged. Zuo kwanu ike dede! Exercise restraint and consider self-deprecation. The former and latter are more honourable than the compilation of names of people to deny freedom.

Like every disinterested Abian, I am not au fait with any of your landmark achievements or legacies, except the unenviable record of human rights violations through illegal arrests and detention of perceived dissent voices in Afara prison just a few months in office.
On the streets of Abia, you are infamous for the use of paid frivolous petitions to get several youths dumped in Afara prison. Inside the correctional facility, battered inmates fear you more than they fear uncle Lucifer.

You are supposed to be a human rights and constitutional lawyer, but you are a specialist in the execution of hatchet Jobs in clear violation of human rights. Slamming false allegations on your victims means nothing to you provided it increases your stake in government. Hmm! O dikwa egwu ooh!

How do you sleep at night, my brother? Maybe, I need to remind you that no tyrant has ended well in the history of the world. History has never been kind to them; it won’t be, today even till eternity. In case you do not know, there will be a chorus of delirium from every nook and cranny of Abia State at the news of your misfortune. Think about it.

You were the one who introduced the unintelligent, roguish and toxic clause ” Government has uncovered plots by hoodlums to cause crisis and unleash mayhem,” into the lexicon of Abia state government.

Till today, government intelligence has never arrested nor given a real identity of any hoodlum. They only uncover their plans without knowing them. This sensational propagandistic tool has been traditionally deployed by you to intimidate, hound and cow many innocent citizens into the dungeon.

Abia state is yet to recover from the embarrassment of your controversial petition to the House of Assembly that resulted in the suspension, retirement and removal of two Chief Judges of the Abia state judiciary. This dirty episode eclipsed the chances of an Ibeku man rising to the position of a Chief Judge.
The former deputy chief of staff, the office of the deputy governor, spent several months in Afara Prison over issues not up to family matter because you preferred to show your mastery of evil machinations against your brother. I am begging you to change to avoid forcing us to lie during your funeral at ripped age of 100. No amount of long epistle, no matter the grammar will change the people’s perception of you.

Dr ACB Agbazuere, I expect you to know that 21st-century leaders use their brain cells more than their muscle tissues, according to Israel Ayivor. Gbanwe my brother n’ihi n’odighi ihe aka riri to n’onu.

Join me next week.

David Ogba Onuoha Bourdex – GIFT OUT PALLIATIVE TO THE PEOPLE OF ABIA NORTH

My beloved good people of Abiriba,

Late February, I left Nigeria for a business trip to Europe and from Austria, I decided to touch base in the United States of America. My plan was to fly back to Nigeria the following week, but before I could make travel arrangements, the news of the coronavirus pandemic that started in China had elicited global concerns.

Although I shelved immediate travel plans to understand the many dimensions of the COVID-19 crisis, I have continued to keep in touch and receive reports about how our people are coping with the current health challenges, to stay alive.

I understand that different levels of government, both at the state and national, have also resolved to lockdown borders and ordered people to stay at home to avoid spread of the highly contagious virus, also known as COVID-19.

Apart from my personal letter to the state government assuring the state of my support to ensure that our people do not languish in hunger due to the lockdown, I have empowered the Bourdex Foundation to reach out to our people with these food items in keeping with our promise to be there for the people and touch lives.

While the food goes round, I pray that Almighty God will keep us all safe, so that at the end of it all, we shall come out to rejoice in the Lord that nobody was lost to COVID-19. I also use the opportunity to crave your understanding and note that although held back in USA because of the shutdown of airports, my heart is at home with you, my dear people.

Let us continue to observe all codes of personal hygiene, especially washing our hands and desisting from touching our eyes, noses and mouths. Observing social distancing and wearing of face masks have also been recommended by experts. These few inconveniences are necessary to keep alive.

Please stay safe. If we survived the civil war, this also shall come to pass!

Kaa ni.

ADDRESS BY H.E. MUHAMMADU BUHARI, PRESIDENT OF THE FEDERAL REPUBLIC OF NIGERIA ON THE CUMULATIVE LOCKDOWN ORDER OF LAGOS AND OGUN STATES AS WELL AS THE FEDERAL CAPITAL TERRITORY ON COVID- 19 PANDEMIC AT THE STATE HOUSE, ABUJAMONDAY, 27th APRIL, 2020

  1. Fellow Nigerians
  2. I will start by commending you all for the resilience and patriotism that you have shown in our collective fight against the biggest health challenge of our generation.
  3. As at yesterday, 26th April 2020, some 3 million confirmed cases of COVID-19 have been recorded globally with about 900,000 recoveries. Unfortunately, some 200,000 people have passed away as a result of this pandemic.
  4. The health systems and economies of many nations continue to struggle as a result of the coronavirus pandemic.
  5. Nigeria continues to adapt to these new global realities on a daily basis. Today, I will present the facts as they are and explain our plans for the coming months fully aware that some key variables and assumptions may change in the coming days or weeks.
  6. Exactly two weeks ago, there were 323 confirmed cases in 20 States and the Federal Capital Territory.
  7. As at this morning, Nigeria had recorded 1,273 cases across 32 States and the FCT. Unfortunately, this includes 40 deaths.
  8. I am using this opportunity to express our deepest condolences to the families of all Nigerians that have lost their loved ones as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. This is our collective loss and we share your grief.
  9. Initial models predicted that Nigeria will record an estimated 2,000 confirmed cases in the first month after the index case.
  10. This means that despite the increase in the number of confirmed cases recorded in the past two weeks, the measures we have put in place thus far have yielded positive outcomes against the projections.
  11. The proportion of cases imported from other countries has reduced to only 19% of new cases, showing that our border closures yielded positive results. These are mostly fellow Nigerians returning through our land borders. We will continue to enforce land border arrival protocols as part of the containment strategy.
  12. Today, the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) has accredited 15 laboratories across the country with an aggregate capacity to undertake 2,500 tests per day across the country.
  13. Based on your feedback, Lagos State Government and the FCT with support from NCDC have established several sample collection centers. They are also reviewing their laboratory testing strategy to further increase the number of tests they can perform including the accreditation of selected private laboratories that meet the accreditation criteria.
  14. Several new fully equipped treatment and isolation centres have been operationalised across the country thereby increasing bed capacity to about three thousand.
  15. I commend the State Governors for the activation of State-level Emergency Operation Centres, establishment of new treatment centres and the delivery of aggressive risk communication strategies.
  16. Over 10,000 healthcare workers have been trained. For their protection, additional personal protective equipment have been distributed to all the states.
  17. Although we have experienced logistical challenges, we remain committed to establishing a solid supply chain process to ensure these heroic professionals can work safely and are properly equipped.
  18. In keeping with our Government’s promise to improve the welfare of healthcare workers, we have signed a memorandum of understanding on the provision of hazard allowances and other incentives with key health sector professional associations.
  19. We have also procured insurance cover for 5,000 frontline health workers. At this point, I must commend the insurance sector for their support in achieving this within a short period of time.
  20. Nigeria has also continued to receive support from the international community, multilateral agencies, the private sector and public-spirited individuals. This support has ensured that critical lifesaving equipment and materials, which have become scarce globally, are available for Nigeria through original equipment manufacturers and government-to-government processes.
  21. The distribution and expansion of palliatives which I directed in my earlier broadcast is still ongoing in a transparent manner. I am mindful of the seeming frustration being faced by expectant citizens. I urge all potential beneficiaries to exercise patience as we continue to finetune our logistical and distribution processes working with the State Governments.
  22. Our Security Agencies continue to rise to the challenge posed by this unusual situation. While we feel deeply concerned about isolated security incidents, I want to assure all Nigerians that your safety and security remain our primary concern especially in these difficult and uncertain times.
  23. As we focus on protecting lives and properties, we will not tolerate any human rights abuse by our security agencies. The few reported incidences are regrettable, and I want to assure you that the culprits will be brought to justice.
  24. I urge all Nigerians to continue to cooperate and show understanding whenever they encounter security agents. Furthermore, for their protection, I have instructed that the personnel of all the security agencies be provided with the necessary personal protective equipment against infection.
  25. As we continue to streamline our response in the centers of Lagos and the FCT, I am gravely concerned about the unfortunate developments in Kano in recent days. Although an in-depth investigation is still ongoing, we have decided to deploy additional Federal Government manpower, material and technical resources to strengthen and support the State Government’s efforts, with immediate effect.
  26. In Kano, and indeed many other States that are recording new cases, preliminary findings show that such cases are mostly from interstate travel and emerging community transmission.
  27. Drawing from these, I implore all Nigerians to continue to adhere strictly to the advisories published by the Presidential Task Force and the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control.
  28. These include regular hand washing, physical distancing, wearing of face masks/coverings in public, avoidance of non-essential movement and travels and avoidance of large gatherings.
  29. Fellow Nigerians, for the past four weeks, most parts of our country have been under either Federal Government or State Government lockdown. As I mentioned earlier, these steps were necessary and overall, have contributed to slowing down the spread of COVID-19 in our country.
  30. However, such lockdowns have also come at a very heavy economic cost. Many of our citizens have lost their means of livelihood. Many businesses have shut down. No country can afford the full impact of a sustained lockdown while awaiting the development of vaccines.
  31. In my last address, I mentioned that Federal Government will develop strategies and policies that will protect lives while preserving livelihoods.
  32. In these two weeks, the Federal and State Governments have jointly and collaboratively worked hard on how to balance the need to protect health while also preserving livelihoods, leveraging global best practices while keeping in mind our peculiar circumstances.
  33. We assessed how our factories, markets, traders and transporters can continue to function while at the same time adhering to NCDC guidelines on hygiene and social distancing.
  34. We assessed how our children can continue to learn without compromising their health.
  35. We reviewed how our farmers can safely plant and harvest in this rainy season to ensure our food security is not compromised. Furthermore, we also discussed how to safely transport food items from rural production areas to industrial processing zones and ultimately, to the key consumption centers.
  36. Our goal was to develop implementable policies that will ensure our economy continues to function while still maintaining our aggressive response to the COVID-19 pandemic. These same difficult decisions are being faced by leaders around the world.
  37. Based on the above and in line with the recommendations of the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19, the various Federal Government committees that have reviewed socio-economic matters and the Nigeria Governors Forum, I have approved a phased and gradual easing of lockdown measures in FCT, Lagos and Ogun States effective from Monday, 4th May, 2020.
  38. However, this will be followed strictly with aggressive reinforcement of testing and contact tracing measures while allowing the restoration of some economic and business activities in certain sectors.
  39. Furthermore, new nationwide measures are to be introduced as follows;
    a. There will be an overnight curfew from 8pm to 6am. This means all movements will be prohibited during this period except for essential services;
    b. There will be a ban on non-essential inter-state passenger travel until further notice;
    c. Partial and controlled interstate movement of goods and services will be allowed for the movement of goods and services from producers to consumers; and
    d. We will strictly ensure the mandatory use of face masks or coverings in public in addition to maintaining physical distancing and personal hygiene. Furthermore, the restrictions on social and religious gatherings shall remain in place. State Governments, corporate organisations and philanthropists are encouraged to support the production of cloth masks for citizens.
  40. For the avoidance of doubt, the lockdown in the FCT, Lagos and Ogun States shall remain in place until these new ones come into effect on Monday, 4th May 2020.
  41. The Presidential Task Force shall provide sector specific details to allow for preparations by Governments, businesses and institutions.
  42. In respect to the above guidelines, State Governors may choose to adapt and expand based on their unique circumstances provided they maintain alignment with the guidelines issued above.
  43. To support our businesses and traders, the monetary and fiscal authorities shall deploy all the necessary provisions needed for production to continue and thus, jobs restored.
  44. These revised guidelines will not apply to Kano State.
  45. With regards to Kano, I have directed the enforcement of a total lockdown for a period of two weeks effective immediately. The Federal Government shall deploy all the necessary human, material and technical resources to support the State in controlling and containing the pandemic and preventing the risk of further spread to neighboring States.
  46. I wish to once again commend the frontline workers across the country who, on a daily basis, risk everything to ensure we win this fight. For those who got infected in the line of duty, rest assured that Government will do all it takes to support you and your families during this exceedingly difficult period. I will also take this opportunity to assure you all that your safety, wellbeing and welfare remain paramount to our Government.
  47. I will also recognise the support we have received from our traditional rulers, the Christian Association of Nigeria, the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs and other prominent religious and community leaders. Your cooperation and support have significantly contributed to the successes we have recorded to date.
  48. I will urge you all to please continue to create awareness on the seriousness of the coronavirus among your worshippers and communities while appealing that they strictly comply with public health advisories.
  49. I also thank the Nigeria Governors’ Forum and the Presidential Task Force for all their hard work to date. Through this collaboration, I remain confident that success is achievable.
  50. I also wish to thank corporate organisations, philanthropists, the UN system, the European Union, friendly nations, the media and other partners that have taken up the responsibility of supporting our response.
  51. And finally, I will thank all Nigerians again for your patience and cooperation during this difficult and challenging period. I assure you that government shall continue to take all necessary measures to protect the lives and livelihoods of our citizens and residents.
  52. I thank you for listening and may God bless the Federal Republic of Nigeria

How Sen. Orji Kalu Has Been Providing Succour For Inmates In Kuje…

Recently, a man from Maiduguri whose brother is presently at the Kuje Prison in Abuja shared his opinion on the kind of personality he discovered former Governor of Abia State and Present Whip of Senate in Nigeria, Senator Orji Uzor Kalu, who is presently at Kuje prison is, contrary to his initial believe. He narrated what his brother told him about the Senator has been a blessing in disguise to them at the correctional centre.

Hear him……

My name is Mohammed Yusuf. I am from Maiduguri, but based in Abuja with my family. My elder brother, Idris, has been in Kuje Prison facing trial since the past 7 years. I visit Kuje prison every week to deliver food stuff to my brother.

When I went to visit my brother in December, he was so excited. We sat down in the prison’s visitors area to talk. My brother informed me that Senator Orji Uzor Kalu had been transferred from Lagos Prison to Kuje prison. My brother was a student of University of Maiduguri the same time Senator Orji Uzor Kalu was a student of that university. Though Senator Kalu never actually met my brother, my brother knew him well because, as he informed me, the young Orji Uzor Kalu was active in students union and was highly popular among the students.

My brother meeting Senator Kalu in Kuje has been a blessing to him and our family, and to the entire prison inmate population. According to my brother, Orji Uzor Kalu is such a kind and down-to-earth man. He transformed the lives of inmates. He made sure the inmates have 10 hours of power everyday instead of 4 hours they used to have. He improved their feeding and constantly sends food and supplies to the inmates. He helped many inmates to perfect their bail or pay fines to regain their freedom.

Though the Senator is a devout Catholic, he does not discriminate when it comes to helping people. He gives to Christians and Muslims equally alike. He doesn’t care about your religion or your tribe. Last week, when I went to deliver food to my brother happened to be Orji Uzor Kalu’s birthday. Every inmate had food – rice, chicken or beef and drinks – supplied by Uzor Kalu. I saw a lot of excitement. I asked what was going on and I was told that it was his birthday. I almost had the opportunity of meeting him one on one, but it wasn’t possible. He only walked past and waived to the cheering inmates.

I had to ask myself again and again, is this the same Orji Uzor Kanu I had been hearing about or another one? I expected a cold calculated politician who would not be at home with common people. But I was surprised by what my brother had been telling me, confirmed by my brief but profound observation.

The Orji Uzor Kalu that I saw appeared humble and smiling as if nothing bothers him at all.
I think I have learned my lesson. Never think you have known anybody until you have taken time to know that person and make your own observation. I had the impression of Orji Kalu as typical politician and shrewd businessman. His conviction did not help my impressions of him. But I must admit I was totally wrong.

Though I don’t know the details of his case, I must tell you it is impossible to reconcile what I thought with what I saw. I just hope other Nigerians will keep an open mind and get to know this man from their own observation. This is a genuinely good man.

I will be going to Kuje again next week. I may be lucky to see him again. But at least, my brother will gist me on the latest on Senator Kalu.

CORONAVIRUS: THE MORNING AFTER – BY ALEX OTTI

‘Put first things first and second things are thrown in. Put second things first and you lose both first and second things.’ – C.S. Lewis

Not too long ago, the President of the US, Donald Trump, was engaged in a fierce war of words with Kim Jong Un, his North Korean counterpart, ostensibly over the testing of submarine ballistic missiles. The muscle flexing included stepping up of the usually controversial US/South Korea joint military drills and exercises in the peninsular. North Korea threatened fire and brimstone and in response, Kim Jong Un carried out an intimidating display of sophisticated military arsenals and launch of various categories of ballistic missiles, to warn his adversaries that his country should not be taken lightly. The world was amazed at the military sophistication displayed by North Korea. Of course, no one doubts the strength of the US when it comes to sophisticated military apparatus and defence spending, after all, it is the number one superpower. It took an unprecedented peace meeting between Trump and Kim to deescalate the hostilities and start a denuclearization program.

Today, the exchanges and meetings along the Korean peninsular are like irritants to the rest of the world that is fighting a real enemy that is killing rampantly in thousands. Trump is trying everything to stop the spread of Covid 19 and reduce the death toll, including recommending unproven and even ridiculous ‘therapies’ like the use of disinfectants and ultraviolet rays. Kim on the other hand is reportedly battling to stay alive after a surgery that didn’t seem to have gone well. Clearly, the massive investments in defence and the stockpiling of armaments have been rendered useless in a War in which the world is threatened by a little, invisible and unarmed virus.

One thing that is clear is that by the time these difficult times would be over, the world would not be the same again. Amazingly, no one in positions of influence and authority seemed to have foreseen this catastrophe a few months ago. Economies have tanked and markets have behaved in ways that were thought impossible just days ago. For instance, who, three months ago, would have thought that producers of oil would be begging buyers to take the dark stuff from them even for free or fee payable by the seller? It is projected that by June, the world will run out of storage space for crude oil. Demand has dropped dramatically as factories have closed, airlines are grounded, and transportation has come to a virtual stop in many parts of the world.

It is obvious that priorities will change in the emerging post Covid-19 era and the world may begin to focus on what is truly important. Abraham Maslow propounded what is widely known as the “The Theory of The Hierarchy Of Needs”, in which he stated that man’s needs are ordered hierarchically as in a pyramid, starting at the base with Physiological needs, Safety needs, Social belonging needs, Self-esteem needs and finally Self actualisation needs. The first level (Physiological needs) and the most important need of man is made up of the rudimentary necessities of life, which would include health, food, shelter, clothing, and sleep. These are basic needs which, only when met, would trigger the need for the satisfaction of other relatively less important, even though necessary needs. In just a few months the needs of people around the world have been reduced to the basic and physiological. Interestingly, many countries of the world will be unable to even fulfill these needs for most of the population.

Our thesis today is about preparing ourselves and our nation for the end of Covid 19. One thing we are certain about is that the Pandemic will end one day. We may not be sure of when or how it will end but we can hazard a guess as to the state that it would leave us as it ends. This is not a difficult task as we are not in doubt about where we are, just 4 months after its debut. Our economy is already in a mess. The global supply chain has been disrupted in both the consumer and producer sides of the divide. The only country shipping anything at all for now is China. Even at that, a significant component of its shipment comprises food, personal protection equipment and medicaments. Those are what is important to the rest of the world now. The USA, for instance, has run out of face masks, gloves, ventilators and respirators. Ironically, it had to receive help from Russia and in what could be seen as a diplomatic coup, Russia sent America medical materials manufactured by a firm that is under sanctions. The physiological need was more important in the transaction. The case is not different across the world. Investments in high technology applications and appliances not related to healthcare, specifically treatment of Covid-19, have been put on hold. Of course, any investment that is not channeled to physiological needs at this time, is dead on arrival. However, while we prepare for extended co-existence with Covid 19, one thing that is clear nevertheless, is that the economy has gone into a tailspin which will ultimately lead us into a recession by October this year. In fact, if care is not taken, it will degenerate into a depression. This is the stark reality and we must begin to think of how to deal with it.

We had stated many times before that we should start planning for a post oil economy. We were not even expecting a catastrophe like Covid-19 then, but everybody knew that the mono product economy we had been running, was not sustainable. Granted that oil prices may, in the medium to long term recover, we must now seriously begin to think of replacing oil as the driver of the Nigerian economy. One fact brought home to us once more, is the need for the diversification of the economy. Luckily, we are a country blessed with material and human resources to make this happen. We must get more serious and decide that much of what we cannot manufacture here, we do not need. This will help us boost our productive capacity and support a self-reliant economy. Closely related to this is the curse of import dependency. We seem to be hooked on the conspicuous consumption of foreign products at the detriment of locally made ones. Unfortunately, this pandemic has brought us face to face with a major foreign currency scarcity the way we haven’t seen it in many years. So, even if we choose not to tame our appetite, the reality of the scarcity of foreign currency would force us to adjust. We are aware CBN is trying to stabilise the foreign exchange market, but it can only do so much as it cannot give what it doesn’t have. Therefore, devaluation or whatever fancy name we wish to call it has started happening and will continue given the circumstance. We will, therefore, have fewer dollars to commit to avoidable importation of foreign goods to meet our acquired tastes. CBN will do well to prioritise allocations that have direct impact on physiological needs, and they are not many.

As identified by Maslow, a major Physiological need of man is food. Covid-19 has taught us that we can do without a wide range of things, but not food. This has been demonstrated by the reaction of people during the lockdown where some had to disregard the policy in search of food. There is no doubt that any government that can guarantee the availability of food can implement an effective lockdown policy for a long period of time. While we had argued that the best way to ensure people have food to eat is to make money available to them, we must concede that to make it a reality, the food itself must be available to be bought. This means that we must have food security as a top priority for Nigeria, post Covid-19. One of the ways to ensure food security is not by implementing an indefinite lockdown policy. In fact, doing so, would ensure that by the time the pandemic ends, starvation would take over and that situation may be as harmful, if not more than the virus. It is against this background that we call on the federal government to consider easing the lockdown in an articulate and well-coordinated manner. Given that the planting season is here, state governors should begin to open their states ensuring adequate protection for citizens and observing social and physical distancing in addition to other protocols against the virus. This becomes very necessary since we are aware that even in the face of the lockdown, the spread has continued, and no one can say for sure when the virus will disappear. In the immediate term, the government should also see agriculture as the new oil and channel all the energy that it hitherto lavished on oil into agriculture. Cash calls and cash support should henceforth be extended to this sector if we want to see a post Covid-19 well-fed citizens.

Covid-19 has opened our underbelly with respect to our criminal neglect of our healthcare sector. No one could fathom that there was going to be a day when our rich people would not be able to fly abroad for medical needs. Before now, some rich people would boast that they did not have any doctor in Nigeria. “My personal physician is in the US, Harley Street in London, Germany, Dubai and Singapore” you would hear some people say. Others would tout India and Saudi Arabia. Now we are all holed up in Nigeria, our physicians have become overstretched. I believe that post Covid-19, we shall all insist that our public health system be properly funded and seriously revived. Something good that one observed as we fight Covid-19 is that the feat of setting up medical facilities in record time is not the preserve of China. We observed serious state governments and the private sector, set up medical facilities with hundreds of beds and isolation centres fitted with ventilators, in a matter of one week, or two . This gives a lot of comfort as it means that once we seriously put our minds into something, we can achieve them. We believe that we should build on, rather than lose, the momentum. We should also support the facilities with well trained personnel. One is not oblivious of the very low standard of education and the practice of medical experts taking flight in search of greener pastures. Our experience should teach us that we must begin now to plant those greener pastures here and start the process of reversing the human resource flight to enable us get our people back and attract other African skilled professionals to the country.

We expect to see more investment in education and Research and Development (R&D). We have written extensively on education and we believe that we all agree that we have failed our nation on education. As the world is battling to find a cure and vaccine, we should not just be spectators. A massive investment in R&D would help us pioneer efforts in finding solutions to our problems be they in healthcare, education, technology or agriculture. Innovation is the result of effective R&D. The world economy is ruled by innovators. Science and technology depend largely on R&D. We should get our scientists and engineers busy in the laboratories. That was how China did it. And talking about China, we believe that we can take over a chunk of manufacturing and global supply chain from them, post Covid-19. Prior to this time, China was the manufacturer of the world. Many countries are now rethinking that strategy of outsourcing manufacturing to China. In fact, Japan is offering incentives for Japanese companies to relocate back to Japan and elsewhere. The US has hinted at that also. We have the population and if we have the will, we can attract part of that market to Nigeria.

There is no doubt that we will not be able to fund the national budget for 2020 and beyond. We are likely to add at least another $10b loan to our existing debt profile, thus taking us to about $95b. Given the massive drop in revenues we will be unable to service the debt. Government should therefore begin to engage our creditors for debt relief and cancellation as that is the only option we have. In any case, we will not be the only ones asking for that. But the bad news is that the additional debt would not do much to prevent the crises. The only choice we have is to perform a surgical operation on the public sector to get rid of excess fat. We cannot afford the bloated public sector expenditure anymore. The monthly sharing ritual in Abuja would come to an end shortly because there will be nothing to share. Those who have been addicted to the despicable feeding bottle would have to fend for themselves. It is then that we will understand that building infrastructure and attracting investments and businesses to our states are no luxury. We will also understand that governments are run by taxes and not handouts. To collect taxes, you must have created some prosperity for the taxpayers. The public sector must not only yield to the private sector but support it for economic survival. The Federal government would have to work with the CBN to implement a quantitative easing policy to stimulate the economy. This, again can only work if implemented at the private sector side of the economy.

Many other sectors of the economy must change. Travels, both local and international will take time to recover. The aviation sector realises this and is already downsizing. Markets, both wet and dry would suffer, particularly in the urban areas. Stores, malls and digital platforms would be the beneficiaries. Social distancing will not abate very soon. Businesses that depend on crowds should reassess their business model as people would rather watch movies in their houses than go to a cinema, for instance.

Let us conclude by stating that many of our postulations remain in the realm of wishes. If we choose to seize the moment, out of the ashes of this pandemic, we shall emerge a stronger economy. As usual, we may also refuse to take advantage of this opportunity and sink deeper into the abyss. The choice is ours!
