Zone Deputy Senate President Seat to South East, Kalu Begs APC

The Senator-elect for Abia North, Dr. Orji Uzor Kalu, Monday pleaded with the leadership of the All Progressive Congress (APC) to zone the position of Deputy Senate President to the South East geo-political zone.

Kalu who made the appeal at the ongoing induction of Senators-elect and House of Representatives members-elect noted that zoning the Deputy Senate President to the South East will be in line with the diversity of the country.
The diversity of the country, he said, is the beauty of the country.

He said that APC as a party should look at diversity, because “diversity is our strength.”

He said, “I am a very loyal party man. The party has already zoned the position of Senate President. I can never disobey the party. The party is supreme.

“What I am asking the party to zone the deputy Senate President to the South East, so that I will not disobey the party by going on the floor of the House, which I have the capacity, if I am allowed to do that.

“What I am asking the party as they have zoned this position of Senate President to North East, they should as well zone the position of the deputy Senate President to South East. So that I don’t go to contest out of zone.

“I can contest against whoever comes from the South East or the caucus of the South East can go back and decide what the part wants within the South East.

“What I am pleading with the leaders of the National Working Committee and other leaders, let us not divide this party. All of us are loyal to the country. We are loyal to the constitution. We are also loyal to our party. I want that loyalty to continue, so that none of us will deviate from what the party”

“On relationship between the Executive and legislature, Kalu noted that it has to be very cordial in the interest of the progress of the country.

He said, “President Buhari means well. And some of us who with or without politics we are his friends, we will like to keep the place very stable.

“Not only for him, but for the good of the country. The President is just one person. If there is stability in the Senate and Executive, there will be stability in the country. We are for the stability of the country.

On the position of Senator Kabiru Gaya that the slot of Deputy Senate President should be zoned to the North West Kalu said:

“You know, he is a senior governor. That is his view. It is not a view that represents the views and understanding of the country. He is a man I respect a lot. But his view does not represent the diversity of the country.

“Even if you like take the President, Vice President, Speaker, Senate President to one part of the country, you have not solved the problem of the country.

“The diversity of the country is the beauty of the country. I will like APC as a party to look at diversity. Diversity is our strength. Diversity is very important.

“I don’t want to formally declare anything until the party zones to our zone. I am not going to challenge the party, but I want the party to do the right thing. I have the capacity to go on the floor of the House and contest. It is this people here that will vote and they are our friends. But I want the party to do the right thing.”

Why Orji Kalu is Best Choice for Deputy Senate President – By: Peter Eze

The All Progressives Congress (APC) should be rest assured they are in very safe hands in the South-East with Dr Orji Uzor Kalu as Deputy Senate President. In about two months time, the 9th National Assembly will be inaugurated and intense politicking is already underway regarding who leads the federal lawmakers in both Senate and House of representatives. Why this is not resolved yet, what remains certain is that the All Progressives Congress (APC) is going to produce the next principal officers in both chambers. In the red chamber, the APC has 25 seats more than the PDP while the ruling party is clearly ahead of the PDP by 100 seats in the green chamber.

The APC national working committee is expected to reconfirm any moment from now which zone gets which position but while the wait is on, there is no doubt the South-East deserves to produce the next deputy Senate president — and there is no doubt Dr Orji Uzor Kalu, former Governor of Abia State and only APC senator confirmed so far, stands out from the region.

Ordinarily, with the composition of positions in the executive and judiciary, it should have been the sole unarguable right of the South East to produce the senate president to balance the power equation. The South-East is the only zone that is obviously left out of the scheme of things both within the ruling party and at the national level . Therefore , the South East conceding the Senate presidency for Deputy Senate Presidency for whatever reason is expected to be heartily welcomed by other zones. Anything short of that could be regarded as hatred, gang up and wickedness against the Igbo specially after the North-East has been favoured to produce the Senate president, whereas North-West and South-West have President and Vice -president respectively, while South -South has the APC National Chairman .

There has also been long cries of marginalisation which the South-East has continued to lament in the past years. By ceding the Deputy Senate presidency to the South-East which will leave Senator-elect Kalu in that position, it will go a long way to pacify the region by bringing it into the mainstream of Nigeria politics. The measure will in turn douse tensions and possible renew of agitation for separation.

Although kalu is coming to the Senate as a first timer, He already has legislative experience from as back as 1992/1993 when he was a Federal Assembly legislator as well as his time in the House of Representatives. Many leaders from the South East have expressed their concerns on the calculated attempts to deny the Igbo their rightful place in the affairs of the nation and others have strongly wielded their support to Kalu for the position . Gov. Rochas Okorocha of Imo state , Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu , Chief Chekwas Okorie have all differently warned against shortchanging the rights of the Igbo on the alter of excuse and hatred .

In a recent interview with the Sun Newspapers , Former Governor of Anambra state and Minister of Labour , Senator Chris Ngige made additional case on why Kalu is a qualified right candidate for even the Senate president position. According to him, “The South-East has Dr Orji Uzor Kalu who was a Federal Assembly legislator during the military regime; it’s counted because it was a national assembly. So, he has got some ranking, his ranking from the House of Representative is counting for him. Therefore, Orji Uzor Kalu is qualified.”

On party level , Kalu has proven to be a true representative of the APC in the region and has continued to raise the party’s flag high despite the opposition from opponents. In the last election, he delivered Abia North for the APC including two House of Representatives seats and Members of House of Assembly.

Perhaps, the most obvious reason why Kalu should be supported in his ambition as number two helmsman in the Senate is his unalloyed loyalty and support for the party. Through thick and thin, the philanthropist has stood by the party and President Muhammadu Buhari, despite the perceived disliking for the ruling party in the South-East region.

Kalu played a major role in the president Buhari ’s re-election. As the National Co-ordinator of National Movement for Re-Election of Buhari (NMFRB) , the former governor took the pains of embarking on a nationwide campaign with his team during which he presented a formidable case on why Buhari is the right man to take Nigeria to the next level,
For instance, in the build-up of the campaign, the former governor had led a delegation to the residence of former military Presidents General Ibrahim Babangida, General Abdulsalami Abubakar, Governors of Jigawa, Niger, Katsina and several traditional rulers in the North and South where he solicited his support for the president. He visited these leaders to convince them on why they should support president Buhari for 2019; to finish his second tenure. His foundation Orji Uzor Kalu foundation also relocated to Maiduguri in Borno state where it’s huge philanthropic gestures were extended to the people .

So what best way is there to reward a loyal party man who has stood out against all odds, sponsored and supported many activities for the success of the party .

Recalling his sacrifices, hard-work and unalloyed support for the APC , Kalu has while declaring his intent to run for the position of the deputy senate president
said he is “ a very loyal party man.”
According to him , “the party has zoned the Senate presidency to the North-East and I want to respect the party’s will; but the second position is what we are not going to allow to leave the South-East. I have suffered for the party and have been called by Nigerians to come out. I want the party to respect the will of every other person and I’m committed to democracy and contesting on the floor of the House.” He stated .
Nigerians and the international community especially Kalu’s fans and supporters are grateful to God for sparing Kalu’s life during his campaign for the APC. More than twice , he escaped assassination attempts when thugs suspected to be hired attacked his convoy . But the attacks couldn’t stop him from continuing his campaign for the APC to secure victory for the party and President Buhari.

The former governor is a successful leader in business and politics with deep legislative experience and he is proven to be a true representative of the APC in South East region. One can attest to this with the massive votes APC garnered from the zone in 2019 compared to that of 2015. He has continued to raise the party’s flag high despite the opposition from opponents.

Indeed, it is clear to even the blind that there can be no better candidate for the position of Deputy Senate President than Kalu who, because of the APC, has been called all sorts of names by his traducers and opponents all to paint him black — but they never succeeded.

2019 Polls: Buhari Furious Over S’East Security Report, Ikpeazu, INEC, Police Implicated

The ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) has resolved to institute a probe into its “poor performance” in the February 23 Presidential and March 9 Governorship and State House of Assembly elections in the South-East region. Particularly of interest are Anambra and Abia States.

In Anambra, Igbere TV gathered that the APC had set up a fact-finding committee to investigate the reason for the poor performance of President Muhammadu Buhari in the presidential poll.

The Acting State Chairman of the party, Basil Ejidike, while inaugurating a 13-man committee for the purpose, said the panel would investigate the role of every stakeholder in the state in the election and recommend appropriate sanctions.

Sources told Igbere TV that the President was particular about Anambra owing to his perceived popularity in the state, coupled with the support from the state governor, Willie Obiano.

According to our source, the President said it was not possible for him to have lost the poll or even perform poorly owing to his wide acceptance in Anambra.

It will be recalled that Buhari polled about 33,000 votes in the presidential election in the state, while his opponent of the Peoples Democratic Party, Atiku Abubakar, scored no fewer than 500,000 votes.

Igbere TV recalls that the Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr Chris Ngige had, shortly after the poll, threatened to sue the Independent National Electoral Commission, stating that the commission’s results were not the true reflection of the party’s performance in the poll.

Similarly, the APC has resolved to call up forms EC8A, EC8B, EC8C, EC8D, card readers and ballot papers used for the last governorship election in Abia state, for forensic test.

We gathered Monday night that President Buhari has since expressed worries and concern as to what truly transpired during the guber poll in the state.

Our source who pleaded anonymity, revealed that a meeting was held in the Presidential Villa over the weekend between the APC National Leader, Bola Ahmed Tinubu and National Chairman, Adams Oshiomhole.

While in the meeting, it was said that reports came revealing how the Governor of Abia, Okezie Ikpeazu spent over N15billion of tax payers money in chasing his re-election bid.

It was gathered that one Mr. Uche (not real name) brought the governor to the new Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Adamu, whom the governor was alleged to have struck a deal with worth $500,000.

The governor was said to have made an advance payment of $200,000, with a promise to pay the balance towards his inauguration in May 29.

Investigation on how some of the monies were shared amongst staff of the villa to ensure the APC lost out, Igbere TV learnt, surfaced during the course of the meeting which made the President very furious.

Our source also revealed that the National Chairman of the party told the President and Bola Tinubu that most of the APC leaders in Abia South, were alleged to have collected bribes from the governor to look away on the election day, because they come from the same zone and wanted him to win a second term, not minding his poor performance in the state.

At the end of the meeting, it was resolved that the INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmoud Yakubu, should be invited for a meeting and that foreign forensic experts should be brought in to examine the electoral materials used in Abia for the last gubernatorial election.

More to come…
